Real hope for Tigard

We're a small community of broken people learning how to live in God's grace. We've all stepped through pain, treaded on uncertainty and felt like we were drowning in doubt.

Yet while we were still powerless — before we could even attempt to fix our problems ourselves — God came and rescued us. (Romans 5:6-8)

This is the hope we have.

Our Pastor

Pastor Paul Bourman cannot remember a time in his life when he did not want to serve people in the role as their pastor. He even attended a high school to start on that path called Luther Preparatory School. He continued his studies for the pastoral ministry at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN, where he received a Bachelor of Arts. Two weeks after graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Charis.

Upon graduation he completed his graduate studies at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI. During these years of studies, Paul and Charis became parents to their two children — Theo and Adeline. He graduated with a Masters of Divinity in 2020. After graduation, he was called to be the church planting pastor of Hope Lutheran Church here in Tigard.

He enjoys running, roasting coffee, hanging out with his wife and kids, and exploring all the beauty that Oregon has to offer. Mostly though, he just wants to love people, invest in those relationships, and hold to the promises of Jesus with them.

What we teach at Hope.

What we believe and teach is rooted in God's perfect Word — The Bible. Because we know it never changes, we know we can put our hope in it.

God

We believe there is only one true God who is holy, eternal, and has all power and wisdom. In the Bible, God reveals himself as Triune - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Bible

We believe the Bible is God's Word. It's true and without error.

Creation

We believe that in six days God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them.

People

We believe that every man and woman is a special creation of God, created in God's own image.

Sin

We believe that we lost the image of God when Adam + Eve gave into the temptation of Satan in the Garden of Eden. This separated us from God, unable to reconcile ourselves to him.

The Gospel

We believe that the gospel is the good news that a loving God sent Jesus Christ to take away the sins of all people, fully and freely given. 

Jesus

We believe Jesus is God's one and only Son, and that he suffered and died on the cross to pay for all of our sins.

His resurrection is our sure hope, that God accepted his payment on our behalf—and anyone who puts their hope in Jesus and what He has already done is part of God's family.

Salvation

We believe that we have eternal life, right now, because Jesus rose on Easter morning.

There's nothing we can add or take away from Jesus' resurrection. Our salvation is fully paid for by Jesus alone.

The Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit creates faith in our hearts through the gospel.

The Church

We believe that there is one holy, Christian church, made up of all who believe in Jesus.

Baptism & Holy Communion

We believe that we become God's children through baptism. We believe God's love and forgiveness is ours in the Lord's supper.

Hope

We believe that Jesus is ruling all things for the good of his people. And that we have sure, true, real hope because of what Jesus did for us.
