This Sunday we get to take in a well known account. It’s the account where Jesus turns water into wine. Except, there’s a much bigger picture here. And you can see it in the countdown in John 2:1. Or I suppose it’s a count-up. Because this is the only time in John’s Gospel where he counts up to anything. This indicates to you that the thing that’s coming next is a really big deal. John wants us to know that this is a huge event that you just have to know, or you don’t really understand Jesus. There’s a bigger picture here in this sign.

And he does call it a sign. He doesn’t call it a miracle. This isn’t just a display of divine power. This isn’t just power, this is a sign. And what does any sign do? It points you to something. It’s a sign that is meant to show you something even more profound about what Jesus is supposed to mean for you.

So what is it that we’re meant to learn about Jesus here that is so monumental for our lives? I’ll give you two things here. First: Jesus cares about the little things. There was a lack of wine at the wedding and Jesus cared about that. He cares about your “little” things, too. Bring them to him! Second: Just like Jesus told Mary that his hour had not yet come, please know that yours has not come yet either. Your best hour, your heavenly hour is still coming.

John 2:1-12

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ motherwas there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

“Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
