There’s reality in the account of Mary. So much reality. I’m not sure we often see how real it is, though. Imagine the last time you looked at a Nativity scene. What did Mary look like? Serene, at peace, full of wonder, right? She got there, but she didn’t start there.
This Sunday we will study together the words from Luke 1:26-45 where Mary is told by Gabriel that she would be the mother of the Savior. Give it a read if you have a moment. You’ll see a Mary who is troubled in her heart. She’s so young, and she’s finding out that her whole life is going to be radically changed. And she has no say in it. She is an achingly real Bible character. And what I hope to do this Sunday is to make that real for you.
Why? Because you are achingly real, too. Just like Mary. And you have a real life, and just like Mary, you have questions about your life. God, how is this gonna work? How is this possibly good for me?
Here’s what we will see together: Jesus doesn’t just come as Savior. He comes as God. And as God he doesn’t ask for permission to come into your life. And he does not ask permission to eradicate death in your life. He doesn’t plead with you to let him forgive sins. He just does it. He doesn’t beg to deal with the hurts and brokenness in your life. He just does it. That’s the rule and reign of Jesus.
